Lower Back Pain Relief in Torrington

person with lower back painLower back pain is the most common condition encountered in our office. It can result from joint dysfunction, muscular spasm or imbalance, structural defects, disc bulges or herniations, nerve entrapment, or possibly even due to pain referred from some other adjacent region.

Our examination includes neurologic, orthopedic, and chiropractic assessments to locate the source of the problem. Other tests like MRI or X-rays may also be needed for a more precise diagnosis.

Determining the Origin of Your Pain

Lower back pain may have several causes, including:

Disc and Nerve Conditions

Disc herniations are among the most common sources of low back pain and sciatica. This byproduct of injury or general wear and tear of the disc is where the disc protrudes and traps surrounding nerve structures, causing pressure on the nerve. Sciatica often results from a disc herniation.

Herniations run the gamut from mild to severe and may even require surgery. Dr. Downs has extensive experience with these issues, diagnosing their severity with imaging such as MRIs and neurological assessment to determine the degree of nerve impairment.

To provide patients with optimal improvement and a speedy recovery, we discuss the available options for care to determine the best course of action for them. We use Cox Flexion Distraction therapy for disc problems, and long-axis pelvic traction using the Anatomotor Traction Roller Massage table.

Spinal and Foraminal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the central canal in the spine, restricting its ability to traverse the entire length safely. Patients may be born with a narrow canal to begin with, or it might result from intrusions into the spinal canal from thickened ligaments, arthritic bone spurs, or disc herniations.

Foraminal stenosis describes the narrowing of the passageways whereby nerves must pass through from the spinal cord to the target organs or tissues. The foramen can also be compromised by conditions such as synovial cysts, bone spurs from arthritis or disc protrusions.

We see these in the course of our day-to-day practice and have successfully treated conditions related to low back pain and sciatica with chiropractic care and other conservative measures to prevent surgery.

Pelvic Pain

The pelvis is the foundation of the spine, and is very involved in transferring weight from the spine to the hips and is essential to normal weight-bearing biomechanics.

Dr. Downs differentiates structural pain that radiates from the lower back, sacroiliac joints, or hip joints from pain referred from internal pelvic conditions. For example, ovarian cysts, pregnancy, and inflammatory pelvic diseases may mimic a structural disorder.

Our experienced doctor has the proper diagnostic tools and tests to find the source of pain and create an appropriate care plan to resolve the condition. The assessment includes the condition of the foot arches, leg length symmetry, and weight-bearing functions of the lower extremities, as conditions further down in the extremities may also link to pelvic pain.

Sacroiliac Pain

This is often caused by an inflammatory condition in the sacroiliac joints. The source could be arthritic, biomechanical, or pain from other internal pelvic sources. Motion palpation techniques are often instrumental in determining sacroiliac joint function, and chiropractic techniques successfully relieve pain.

Failed Back Surgery Pain

Over the years, Dr. Downs has seen many patients who have had surgery to address their issues yet continue to have ongoing or recurring problems. With physical assessment, testing, and evaluation of conservative treatment protocols, we can determine what therapeutic options are available to the patient. In some cases, pain management with chiropractic care is the best option.

Pregnancy-Related Pain

Chiropractic is an essential option for managing structural pain associated with pregnancy. Women experience significant structural changes based upon the growth of the fetus and hormonal effects on the skeletal system, resulting in musculoskeletal complaints common during pregnancy.

Just the weight gain alone places extraordinary stress on the pelvic and sacroiliac joints and hips, but chiropractic is beneficial in relieving pain and optimizing function. Those patients who have chiropractic care during pregnancy have been found to have easier labor and delivery. At Downs Chiropractic, we often get referrals from obstetricians to help their patients get through pregnancy more comfortably.
