Our Mission

Downs Chiropractic strives to provide traditional chiropractic therapy in a patient-centered supportive and professional environment for the primary purpose of promoting better health for our patients. lt is our opinion that quality healthcare represents a partnership between doctor and patient whereby effective communication is paramount in outlining realistic outcomes and expectations. We try to explain your condition in clear, rational terms and present the variety of options available for you to make sound decisions in achieving your therapeutic goals. We do not advocate long-term "corrective" oriented plans, which inherently imply cures that no one can predict; rather, treatment is initiated only when the examination and diagnostic findings indicate a likelihood of therapeutic success via chiropractic. The amount of treatment needed is based upon evidence- based standards of care, and more importantly, results. Each patient responds differently and therefore your care plan is unique based upon your clinical findings, response, goals, limitations, and other factors. We pride ourselves upon working closely with other area specialists, so if you have other specialty needs, those can be addressed as well.

Finally, we embrace a holistic concept of wellness whereby supplementary services such as massage therapy, acupuncture, nutrition, dry needling, and exercise protocols are all readily available to optimize clinical results.

History of Downs Chiropractic

After graduating from New York Chiropractic College in April 1985, Dr. Downs immediately started as a temporary employee for a chiropractor in Levittown, NY, covering for an injured associate. This two-month indoctrination after graduation was a valuable experience. The next opportunity was at a multidisciplinary clinic in New York City. From June 1985 through July 1986, Dr. Downs was a full-time associate at Dr’s Fifth Avenue, working with two senior chiropractors, two medical doctors, and a podiatrist. This proved to be a valuable experience as well, both in treating a large volume of patients as well as in collaborating with other health professionals in optimizing patient care.

Wanting to return to Connecticut, Dr. Downs opened a chiropractic office on South Main Street in Torrington with classmate and colleague, Dr. Gregory Bruno. Operating as two sole proprietors sharing office space, the practice grew steadily to the point where another doctor was needed. Doctors Downs and Bruno formed a partnership, titled Chiropractic Care Office, and hired Dr. Leonard Kocis as an associate chiropractor. The three-doctor facility thrived until April 2000 when changes in the managed care environment prompted a change in the business plan, whereby each doctor converted to a solo practice. At that point, Downs Chiropractic was launched, and in October 2004, moved to its present location at 459 Prospect Street.
